Make wine without buying a single carboy

A full home-winemaking setup costs $300+ and then sits on a shelf most of the year. Backup Wine is building a community-run rental directory so you can borrow one locally instead. We're just getting started — one supplier today (Metro Detroit), and growing as more community members list their gear.

Want to rent

Skip the buy-everything-up-front step. Borrow a full setup from a community member nearby. If nobody is in your area yet, get on the waitlist — we'll email you the moment a supplier lists near you.

Have gear to share

Got carboys gathering dust between batches? List your equipment in the directory, help a neighbor make their first wine, and earn a little back on gear you already own.

Up to ~4 simultaneous 6-gallon batches

Take the gear home, park it in Todd's warehouse, or use the warehouse as your own bottling studio.

Your area could be next

We're adding suppliers as community members sign up. If you have gear in another region, you can be the first listing in your area.

List your gear

Don't see your area? Get on the waitlist and we'll email you when a supplier joins near you.

Looking for a make-your-own-wine studio instead (where someone else handles the carboys and you just show up for bottling night)? Browse the studio directory →

How it works

For renters

  1. 1. Send a request with your name, email, and ZIP.
  2. 2. If a supplier serves your area, they reach out with availability and a quote. If not, you're on the waitlist for new listings.
  3. 3. Pick up the gear, make wine, return it clean.

For suppliers

  1. 1. Submit the form below with what you'd rent out and where you are.
  2. 2. We follow up to build your directory listing — capacity, gear, and how renters reach you.
  3. 3. Renters in your area find your card and message you directly.
Renters

Find a rental, or join the waitlist.

Tell us where you are and what you're hoping to make. If a supplier serves your ZIP, we'll route your request straight to them. If not, you're on the waitlist and we'll email you the day that changes.

Free. No spam. We don't share your info.

Got carboys gathering dust?

Tell us a little about what you have and where you are. We'll follow up to build out your directory listing — capacity, what's included, how you want renters to reach you, and what rental options you'd like to offer.

  • You set the pricing and the rental options
  • We handle the directory and route renters to you
  • List as little or as much gear as you want

Good to know

What if there's no supplier in my area yet?

Submit the renter form anyway. We'll add you to the waitlist for that ZIP and email you the moment a supplier lists near you. The list is brand-new — every signup helps us figure out where to recruit suppliers next.

How is pricing handled?

Pricing varies by supplier, by rental option, and by how long you need the gear. We don't list a flat rate — each supplier replies to your request with a quote. Most rentals work out to a small fraction of buying everything new.

What's typically NOT included in a rental?

Consumables: wine kits or juice, bottles, corks, labels, and one-use sanitizer. Suppliers can usually point you at where to buy them — or you can use our shopping lists.

I have gear — what does listing actually involve?

Submit the supplier form below. We'll follow up to gather the details for your directory card (capacity, what's included, area you serve, contact preference), set up the listing, and route renters in your area to you. You decide pricing and which rental options you offer.

How does Backup Wine make money on this?

Right now, it doesn't — this is a community service to help home winemakers get started without a $300 buy-in. Long-term we may add a small platform fee for suppliers, but the directory itself stays free for renters.
